We continue our quest on digging into "Thinking in Systems: A Primer" by Donella H. Meadows.

Engineering relies on predictability. We analyze loads, specify materials, define processes, and expect a certain outcome. Yet, complex systems frequently deliver unexpected results, often repeating familiar patterns of failure or stagnation. In the previous article, we discussed the core principles of systems thinking, understanding behavior through elements, interconnections, and purpose, driven by stocks, flows, and feedback loops.

Today, we examine common, recurring system structures known as system archetypes. Donella Meadows and others identified these patterns across diverse fields. Recognizing them in engineering contexts is like having access to a library of known failure modes or predictable problem patterns. It helps move beyond symptom-chasing to diagnose the underlying structure generating the behavior.

Understanding these archetypes does not offer simple "solutions," but it provides powerful leverage in identifying why problems persist and where effective intervention might lie.
